My Story

Lindsey - how long have you been doing what you do and how did you become a Pain Coach?

To answer this question, it’s probably best that I share with you a defining moment, that brought me to where I am today – coaching people like you on exactly what to do to reduce or potentially eliminate their chronic pain. That defining moment in my life happened in 2013.
I'd been working as an Occupational Therapist since graduating from University in 2001. I fell in love with the field as a student when I saw patients recovering from serious illnesses or injuries and heal not only their bodies but also their souls. They learned essential life skills to return to a life that was healthier all round - from finances to relationships to everyday living.
I loved the idea of helping people to live their healthiest and best life. I was always on the look-out to find new ways that people could get back to being healthy. I took on assignments in a variety of settings in order to learn more.
But along the way, I met too many people who were being given a terrible life sentence of pain and told there was nothing they could do to change it. I felt helpless, I felt frustrated... and I felt so angry that this situation was accepted as OK in the 21st century.
One month, I had three clients, practically at the same time - with three needless life sentences of pain: one man in his 40's with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) who had to wear gloves to protect his skin from painful touch. His wife was just trying to cope with his constant falling. Another was a veteran in his 50's suffering from tremendous back pain and bed-ridden. The stress on his wife was horrendous and he couldn't even get to the pain clinic to access what limited treatment there was. The third was a woman with Chronic Fatigue who lived in her bed surrounded by clutter, barely able to get to the bathroom - even talking was painful for her. These three patients - all at the same time - were the straw that broke the camel's back for me. I decided that was not acceptable.
All I kept saying to myself was: “How did life end up like this?! How did I end up in a world, in 2013 - where people are still allowed to live this way? With all the advances in medicine - there must be a better way! How can I find a way to release these people from a medical life sentence and make a difference for them? How can I help give them their lives back and be able to live with some sense of normality?”
I knew first-hand it was possible to come back from complete physical breakdowns. I worked through it personally after my first child was born to get my body working properly again after being plagued with a variety of painful conditions - migraines, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis and other pains that couldn't be explained with the typical medical model. I was learning how the mind and body were connected and how there were no limits to what the human body could do. The process did not take forever and miraculous shifts could happen quickly.
As I continued to work with clients, I started to apply what I had learned first-hand, combined with ongoing studies. I came across the pioneering work of Dr. John Sarno who recognised the powerful links between our minds, bodies and pain, and Georgie Oldfield who developed SIRPA (Stress Illness Recovery Practitioners Association) and brought this work to the UK.
I was learning that chronic pain was due to a variety of factors - not just injury or illness. Anything that traumatizes the body - worry, anger, fear, shame, guilt - all impacts the body as well as the mind and can short circuit people being able to experience complete health and freedom.
I continued my research into mind-body work, became a certified SIRPA practitioner and OldPain2Go® practitioner, dealt with my pain and past demons and started teaching anyone else who suffers from chronic pain how they can do the same: I watched their self-esteem return, their relationships become closer, their anxiety disappear as they became in control and free again. Their prison sentence had ended and they had a future!
I have since made a commitment to dedicate the rest of my professional life to helping people everywhere who feel misunderstood by the medical community, are suffering from being over-prescribed with medication and tired of being tired and in pain. I help them breakthrough their worry, anxiety, depression and fear to feel better inside and out, be in control of their life again and live the life they want - pain free.
Since then, I’ve worked as a Pain Coach with many private clients, spoken in front of groups and helped numerous people return to pain free living. I have developed the Chiron Chronic Pain Release Coaching Package, a series of important inner and outer steps everyone suffering from chronic pain needs to apply in order to regain control and release themselves from the life sentence of pain.

I am DBS checked, HCPC registered and a member of the British Association of Occupational Therapists.

I work with people just like you who are suffering with chronic pain, have been through the medical system, seen every doctor under the sun and nothing seems to help. They are motivated to get better, are sure there must be way outside standard medical models that will help - they just don’t know what, or how and where to start.

Although we will occasionally touch on the physical aspects of the pain and other ‘pain management’ things, you have me as a mind-body expert and consultant. With my therapy background, I am able to incorporate the best bits of pain management principles with the mind-body approach to provide a truly holistic treatment programme that works!

I’m concerned with how to help you be released from your pain so you can get on with your life. I teach you new understandings of your body and mind and proven ways to take back the control. I work using evidence-based techniques on the inner and outer principles to enable you to become pain-free, looking at your pain from every angle - emotional, psychological, sociological, spiritual. What that means to you is that you get an experienced, authentic and effective pain coach with compassion (and a healthy dose of humour!).

I understand how alone many people feel, trapped in their pain, which is why I feel it’s so important that you have my support every step of the way on your recovery journey. Any questions, worries, problems - you’ll always get an honest response and a plan of how to move forward.
The Chiron Chronic Pain Release Coaching Package was created for people who are absolutely excited and serious about regaining control and releasing themselves from the life sentence of pain. This means not beating yourself up any more saying “My life is over”, “What’s going to happen to me?”, “I can’t do running/sports/play with the kids/go out”, “I feel like I’ve lost myself”, “Will it ever end?”. It was created for you to put new strategies and practices in place within a few months (sometimes weeks!), which will eventually lead you to feel calmer, happier, have closer relationships and higher self-worth as you become in control and pain-free again.

Being an open-minded, proactive practitioner myself, I’m known to work best with other similar people who are committed to their success. I work with those who are super-ready to get started and just want to know exactly what steps to take to transform their health, relationships and futures. My clients often tell me - “Just tell me what to do and I’ll do it!” Consider what you’ll do with me to be a step by step course on everything you need to know to recover from pain and live your best life. You will be expected to take serious and consistent action and take on a different way of thinking with full support while you take on this incredibly exciting goal: to release yourself from your life sentence of chronic pain.
Please know that I am very selective in who I work with and I cherry-pick my clients, choosing to (gently) turn away people who aren’t suited to my programme and won’t get the results for which they would have signed up (it wouldn’t be fair to them). The Chiron Chronic Pain Release Coaching Package is NOT for those who are unwilling to consider that their pain may have causes other than mechanical damage. Other types of personality I won’t work with (without exception) are the whiner or the chronic sceptic, as well as individuals who consistently make excuses for not getting their assignments done or challenging every aspect of the programme.

This program is not for those who think pharmaceuticals or surgery give us the only options for pain treatment or are not prepared to take charge of their health. If you are one of these people, I gently and respectfully ask that you not call and I hope you understand why. We’ll probably just not work well together, and I wouldn't want you to waste your time or money. Is that fair?
Chiron Chronic Pain Release Coaching Package is an on-line coaching programme to help you take back control of your health, release your pain and achieve your goals. Yes! The result of my work is an approach to reducing your stress response and shifting your mindset and belief system around your pain, all based upon sound scientific evidence. With time and consistency you’ll be feeling the benefits – increased calm, increased confidence, increased feelings of self worth, better sleep, closer relationships, improved mood, more fun … and less pain! This approach has been shown to be more effective than conventional treatments in follow-up studies that have been carried out:
  • At 6 months, 45.8% of Fibromyalgia sufferers had at least 30% pain reduction, and 20.8% had at least 50% pain reduction. 0% of the control group showed any improvement (Hsu et al. 2010).

  • 21.9% of people with Fibromyalgia still had at least 50% reduction in symptoms 6 months after mind-body treatments (8.5% with CBT, 11.4% with education) (Lumley et al, 2017).

  • 76% of people with chronic pain had a significant reduction in their pain to the point where it no longer affected their lives (Sarno, 2006).

That depends upon how quickly you can make those inner shifts. Some clients are ready to go and reduce their pain in a very short time frame, sometimes even a few weeks, while others have a bit more work to do first. It also depends upon how well a person understands the mind-body connection, how consistently they apply all the knowledge and tools taught and other life events that may pop up along the way.
Do all of your homework. Be totally committed to your success. Understand that this is a process, a proven one, that works if you take action and implement all of the steps. All my clients who have diligently applied every step of the Chiron Chronic Pain Release Coaching Package have successfully reduced or eliminated their pain, often after years of trying treatment after treatment from standard medicine and seeing no lasting improvement. Not only do they get less pain following the Pain Coaching, they also have all experienced a drop in their anxiety levels, improved self esteem and have more joy in their lives.
